This is a brief history of Wood Haven Health Care.
By the Provisions of the legislative act of 1816, the County
Commissioners were authorized to build a "poor house", and to appoint
annually seven persons to constitute a board of directors. This
board was authorized to make such rules and regulations as were
necessary for the management of the institution and to appoint a
Superintendent. He was directed to keep a book listing the name
and age of every person receive, together with the date of admission.
The board of directors, or a committee of that body, was required to
visit the "poor house" monthly to examine the condition of the papers
and to make a report on such matters as to the food, clothing and the
treatment of the inmates.
In 1850 the name count poor house was change to that of County
Infirmary. Fifteen years later, in 1865 the board of infirmary
directors, consisting of three resident electors, were to be elected by
the voters of the county for a three year term. The board was
still authorized to appoint a Superintendent and was still required to
make inspections and report their finding to the County Commissionsiers.
On Mary 3, 1868 the first Infirmary Directors were appointed and on June
the same years a contract was awarded to A.K. Vail and Company on a bid
of $4,900.00, the house to be built on the old Adam Phillip farm of
which the county had obtained title. The farm consisted of 200
acres. The office and resident side of the home was erected in
1881. The barn in 1892 and the other wing for the inmates was
built in 1898. The hog barn was built from bricks salvaged from
the old Wood County Jail. The large barn, which was built in 1892,
burned to the ground in June of 1965.
On January 1, 1913 the board of infirmary directors was abolished an the
powers formerly exercised by this body were transferred to the County
Commissioners and the infirmary Superintendent. The Superintendent
is still required to keep a record of the inmates as prescribed by the
statute and to report annually to the County Commissioners.
In 1919 the name County Infirmary was change to that of County Home.
Admittance to the County Home was granted to those persons who have
maintained a legal residence in Wood County for a period of at least one
year, which has since been changed to three months and who do not have
sufficient means to proved for the common necessities of life. All
applications of admittance are made directly to the Superintendent of

completed at a cost of $1,500,000.00 and dedicated as the Wood County
Nursing Home. Renovations in the 1990's included a new kitchen,
enlarged dining area and a new activity room.
During Mrs. Roof's tenure as Administrator, the people of Wood County
voted to pass a levy to build a new nursing home at the site on E. Gypsy
Lane Road. The Wood County Nursing Home was approved and opened in
1971. Residents were moved into the new facility in February of
1971, as an end result of the good will of everyone in Wood County by
passage of a bond issue to proved the majority amount of moneys to
construct such a facility.
The original County Home was turned over to the Historical Society and
Park Commission in 1973 for its restoration.

1975 until 1987. The Wood County Commissioners appointed a
management company, Communicare, Inc. based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, to
oversee the running of the Wood County Nursing Home. Mary Jan, of
